| » HISTORY Kanazuki Reiko is the eventual heir to the Kanazuki Magic Emporium chain. Her father, Kanazuki Tadao, founded the store in his early twenties and it quickly became highly popular with teenagers and children, allowing him to expand his business all over Japan (and causing the decade long fad of elementary kids taking playful interest in spells and hexes). He later married Ogura Eri, who worked for a supplier of rare plant seeds. The two had met in a business meeting and shared the common interest of spell-casting, both attempting to hex the other into falling in love with them, both eventually realizing magic wasn’t at all needed. As such, Reiko grew up taking a deep interest in magic and the occult. By then, magic was no longer popular with young children – and, as Reiko’s interests were primarily in the more forebodingly-named branch of black magic, the other children tended to avoid her even more than they felt the need to tease her. Reiko appeared not to mind, as she spent most of her time with her parents, learning curses and the history of magic and alchemy from them. Both somewhat estranged in their own right, neither Tadao nor Eri realized this might negatively affect their daughter. Reiko went through elementary and middle school mostly without friends; she was studious and kept her grades up (or the teachers gave her good marks, as they didn’t want to meet the parents of such a frightening child). As she aged, she blossomed into what many would call “a dark-haired beauty,” causing boys who didn’t know her to give her attention. Some even asked her on dates, which she agreed to – but when she developed feelings for one of them, she expressed them the only way she knew how: through curses. This frightened them off and soon everyone knew to avoid Kanazuki Reiko, the face of an angel with the powers of a demon. When Reiko entered the high school division of Ouran, she discovered the Black Magic Club, formed three years prior by Nekozawa Umehito. She joined immediately, and it didn’t take long for her experience with curses to be recognized by the other members. She became friends with the others, though treated them with almost as much indifference as she did strangers – which they knew to accept as Reiko simply being Reiko. | |
| » ABILITIES A member of the Ouran High School Black Magic Club, Reiko specializes in curses above all other occult hobbies – her prowess has earned her the title of Princess of Curses among her fellow members. She does not appear to have any other interests or talents and, coming from a comparatively unrenowned family, she goes mostly unnoticed in the school and in class 1-D. Though Reiko rarely wastes her time cursing people who haven’t done something to deserve it, her mysterious demeanor and lack of social skills intimidates and frightens almost all who meet her. | |
| » PERSONALITY Reiko is a reserved young lady, and despite coming from a rich family she displays no upper-class manners aside from basic etiquette. Reiko describes herself as “poor at socializing” – she simply does not know how to deal with people, and cannot understand that her reactions (boldly out of the ordinary) may frighten some. Though extremely passive, Reiko is a polite girl. Sadly, the only way she knows how to express her feelings is through curses, as she hasn’t had many friends in the past. Many students of her high school fear her due to her reputed proficiency with “black magic” – but Reiko would never curse someone innocent, and only invokes black magic when someone has drawn her ire (not an easy thing to do). Her only friends are the other members of the Black Magic Club – none of whom are in her class – and this seems not to bother her. Reiko has accepted that she is socially inept and does not expect anyone to like her. Though she admits this without inflection, it’s still quite possible that deep down she yearns for a true friend – someone to see all of her and accept it. She talks about her feelings to no one, as she barely understands them herself, and in fact remains rather stoic most of the time. | |
